Ang Pao Clutch Tutorial Part 2: Assembling the Clutch

P1010203

This is a continuation of my last post, so make sure you have followed all the previous instructions first!

Step 7: Make the cover flap

P1010199
Match the fashion fabric and the lining fabric, right sides facing each other. Pin into place.
P1010200
Sew the lining and fashion fabric together along the seam allowance at the cover flap. You may wish to use a 1/4 inch piecing foot to make the task easier. Use a shorter stitch length like 2mm since we are sewing curves.
P1010204
Your stitches should start and end at the notches marked in GREEN.
P1010206
Clip the fabric through all the layers at the GREEN notches. Clip up to the seam.
P1010208
Clip the curves and corners to reduce bulk.
P1010209
Pinking shears work great too! But be careful not to cut into your stitches.
P1010215
Turn the flap right side out…
P1010210
…and press flat.

Step 8: Curve the middle pocket divider (optional)

P1010193
Fold the area of the lining with the interfacing attached in half, along the RED notches.
P1010194
Draw a curve with a 1/2 inch dip from the centre of the interfacing.
P1010195
Use a French curve to get a nice curved line.
P1010196
Sew along the curve (use a short stitch length).
P1010197
Clip the curve.
P1010198
Turn the curve right side out and press flat.

Step 9: Make the lining pockets

P1010211
Press down the 1/2 inch seam allowance at the bottom edge of the lining.
P1010218
Fold the lining fabric such that the GREEN notches meet. You should end up with two pockets separated by a middle divider.
P1010216
Like so…
P1010221
Pin the lining layers into place, taking care to keep the fashion fabric out of the way.
P1010219
Sew the lining layers with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, starting from the GREEN notches and ending at the bottom fold.
P1010222
Like so.
P1010223
Trim away about 1/4 inch of the seam allowance. Clip the corners.

Step 10: Make the outer shell pocket

P1010224
Press down the 1/2 inch seam allowance at the bottom edge of the fashion fabric.
P1010225
Fold up the fashion fabric, matching the GREEN notches.
P1010226
Like so. Pin to secure and remember to keep the lining fabric out of the way.
P1010229
Sew the fashion fabric with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
P1010230
Trim away the corners.

Step 11: Insert the lining pockets into the outer shell pocket.

P1010231
Holding the corners together, flip the outer shell pocket over the lining pockets such that the lining pockets are enclosed within the outer shell pocket.
P1010232
Use a flat object such as a ruler to push the lining fully into the outer shell pocket.

Step 12: Sew the edges of the lining and the outer shell together

P1010236
Pin the edges of the lining and the outer shell together at the front pocket.
P1010234
Remember to align the side seams together by securing with a pin.
P1010239
Stitch the opening closed using topstitch. You can also opt to sew the opening closed by hand to avoid unsightly seams.
P1010240
Begin and end your topstitch at the side seam.

Step 13: Press flat

Step 14: Apply the buttons

P1010243
Play around with the positions of the buttons until you find one that is aesthetically pleasing.
P1010247
You can secure the buttons with a glue gun…
P1010245
…or needle and thread (recommended if giving to young children).
