Chiffon Shirt Dress

Whilst trawling Pinterest for modest clothing I came across this lovely dress from Diane von Furstenberg.

I had to draft my own version.

Chiffon shirt dress with gored skirt.

All drafted out, except for sleeve pieces. I’ll be using a sleeve piece from another pattern of mine.

Instead of making it button down all the way to the hem, I plan to make a front placket for the buttons till about mid-thigh. Doing away with the back yoke too to hopefully save on fabric. To get the gathered waist and full skirt I’m gathering the skirt part of the dress at the empire line, with an option to add belt loops or a back tie later on. Decisions, decisions. And of course there ain’t gonna be no thigh high side slit unlike the DvF dress.

But so far things are looking good, I’ve cut out the pattern pieces from pattern tissue paper. I plan to use this grey chiffon with bird silhouettes for the dress. The fabric is quite opaque so it will not need to be lined, but on the downside the chiffon is rather ‘plastic-ky’. Hoping that it won’t turn out looking like a raincoat.
